Searching For Work – And Meaning

wonderskyQuestion: My current job has a lot of different parts to it, which is sometimes wonderful and exciting, and sometimes frustrating and exhausting.  As I look toward a new job, I am wondering two things: What questions can I ask myself to identify which “parts” of my job are most satisfying so I can focus my job search towards the most meaningful roles for me?  And how do I know if I should be searching for a position where I “wear a lot of hats,” (exciting and exhausting) or if I should be looking for a position where I can deeply focus on one skill set (which could be deeply satisfying and yet maybe, boring)?  – J

Hi J –

Thanks for your question! Preparing for a career change – especially one yet unknown in role and/or industry – can be challenging and draining. Let’s see what your chart has to say about meaningful work and the questions of variety vs. focus. Hopefully it will help you tap into internal energy and excitement that will serve you through your search!

Questions to focus your search on meaningful role:

  • Will the role:
    • Benefit humankind?
    • Promote fairness?
    • Allow for big picture, innovative thinking?
    • Include group work?
    • Manifest your values out in the world?
    • Allow autonomy?
    • Ask you to be bold and tap into your courage?
    • Provide stability so you can truly engage?
    • Require you to take action on behalf of others?
    • Provide tangible value to your community?

Multiple Hats vs. One Skill Set

In your chart, two very different abilities show up when looking at the way your mind works.

On one hand, you have exceptionally clear judgment and prefer practical, goal-oriented pursuits that are achieved through focus and drive. You are methodical and enjoy teaching and learning through a step-by-step approach. Integrity is of key importance.

On another, it is natural for you to take in as much information as you possibly can. You have an unending curiosity and desire to learn. You crave dwelling in possibility and thrive on the variety of life.

So, what does that mean for your search? The short answer is you need an outlet for both parts of your personality.

Look for work where you are encourage to engage with the world from a standpoint of curiosity about others. One that requires information gathering. A role that encourages you to actively learn and teach.

Make sure the role asks that once you have the information and connections, you are expected to focus and do something concrete. A role that expects leadership and achievement.

You are a transformer of people and process, who deeply cares about the world. We need your gifts out there!
