Torn Between Work and Family

yeshi-kangrang-325341Dear Cosmic Career Coaches:

I am currently pretty confused about what direction my career should take?
I was working right out of graduation in a government job which I quit after having babies as I did not enjoy the job being too administrative. I imagine that I would enjoy a more dynamic job that allows me to travel abroad , however with young children now, my options are limited.

In order to have a career and yet have time for my kids , I’m wondering if I should consider a job in real estate sales that offers flexible schedule? However I’m not sure if I can make it in sales? and I’m more drawn towards the arts and a career that has more meaning. I am also interested in astrology and counseling but that requires me to further study for the relevant knowledge and skill set as right now I only have a generic business degree.

Another sensible option would be a shift job as a childhood teacher, that would match well with my current stage in life, however I have a feeling that I won’t have enough patience for young children (also the reason why I decide that I can’t be a full-time housewife looking after my kids ).

Marriage and family is very important to me so I feel torn between work and family. I am not certain of what talents or skills I can value add to a workplace, but I just know that I need an identity outside of marriage for me to stay sane. Really appreciate any advice or insights you can offer me from looking at my chart.

Thanks, Confused

Hi Confused, many thanks for reaching out.  I can sense the tension that’s happening for you!  It is clear that you need work outside the the house that challenges your mind, supports your understanding of yourself as an independent person and feels meaningful.  It is also clear you have family commitments that require this chapter of your work life be flexible and doesn’t necessarily require further education.

From your chart and from your note, I gather that choosing work solely for the schedule will not suffice and that as innately good at being a mom that you are, there’s a strong drive in you to contribute in additional ways.  In situations like these, I think you are on a helpful track to think about what talents and needs you have.  Here are a few I notice in your chart:

Contributions

  • Seeing the big picture
  • Giving of yourself generously
  • Investigating, research – finding what is really going on
  • Taking on challenges, leadership
  • Coming up with new ways of approaching things
  • Focus on things that feel deeply important

Logistical Needs

  • Autonomy, independence and freedom to set your own agenda and act on it
  • Variety of input and information
  • Mental stimulation
  • Expansive, broadening your experience of the world
  • Environment of trust

yuxiang-zhang-437423Could you be a great counselor (astrology or otherwise)?  Absolutely!  Could you also excel in real estate and other relationship based sales careers?  Totally!   Often when there seems like many options for what roles/titles you could do and it is confusing which one would be the best fit (for now and the future), I suggest looking through a different lens to alleviate some of the stuckness.

One such lens is looking at your search first through the eyes of sector.  While travel is difficult at this stage, perhaps focus on work that will bring an expansiveness to your mind.  Consider working at a local educational institution where you can be close to learning, take advantage of free lectures.

Another lens is to think about culture and mission.  What organizations are doing really innovative work that is helping people?  Are there places where you can really get behind their mission?

Looking at your chart, this upcoming year is a great time to look at these kinds of questions – how does you work life need to change?  When you get right down to it, what is at the core of what you want and need?

Sending good thoughts your way as you uncover what’s next!

If we can be of any additional help, feel free to reach out to me or Tom!

A career that satisfies both freedom AND security

jerry-kiesewetter-191819Question:  I have Chiron in Gemini in the 10th house (shout out to Aubrie and all the Gemini 10th housers!). I’ve tried many jobs in my career since graduating from college with a degree in journalism, (most of them centered on marketing for nonprofits) and teaching. I currently work remotely in a job that doesn’t pay much as a stop gap until I figure out my next move.

After all these years, I’ve built very little in terms of material assets, material security or career reputation.

I’d like to pursue an entrepreneurial path because I seek both freedom, creativity, making a real difference in people’s life AND material security. Lately, I’ve considered becoming a fashion stylist and blogger, an astrologer and a real estate agent. With all my divergent interests, I’m afraid of putting myself out there and slapping a label on myself not because I’m shy but because: 1) I know how easy it is for me to change my mind and feel trapped in a job or title 2) I’m afraid others (family, friends, potential clients) will see me as a dilettante and if I ever have to find a “real job,” potential employers will be turned off by my scatteredness.

I have an opportunity to pursue a career as a real estate agent since my significant other has embarked on that journey. I have been prompted by friends, family and my partner to try it. However, I’m not very creatively inspired by the prospect.

I know I have great potential (people have told me I have great leadership skills) and my chart supports a great many careers including the ones I mentioned above and more.

How do I find/create a career that satisfies my need for freedom AND security? What potentials am I not seeing in my chart?

tamara-menzi-93235Answer: Many thanks for writing Anne!  There’s so much about your situation that strikes me and can be connected astrologically.  I follow you on the leadership traits (Moon in Capricorn being just one), teaching and journalism (Chiron in Gemini in the 10th, 9th and 3rd house planets) and service orientation (Virgo rising).  What really stands out to me amidst all this, however, is this opposition between freedom and security – which is why I want to focus on the North and South Nodes, squared by Jupiter.

Let’s start with Jupiter in Aquarius (in your 6th house of day-to-day work no less).  Jupiter in this sign wants FREEDOM above all else.  Seeing all sides and continuously learning is energizing and life giving.  There is part of this Jupiter placement that relishes doing things differently than others, not fitting the mold. No wonder you don’t want to be locked into one job or career.  This energy can work very well for you (more on that a little later) – and it is complicated because it is in tension with your North and South Nodes making it a place you might get stuck.

There is a natural opposition/tension energy created by the Nodes for everyone, and for you personally there is a tension between the desire to look to others for definition/direction and a carving of your own concrete path.  You are being asked to understand what *you* value and need, to create a solid foundation for yourself.  Hard enough as it is without Jupiter complicating the matter, making all this feel much more intense!  You’ve got a pinball machine situation going – your desire for freedom triggers your insecurities about how to feel solid in the world.

So how can you move forward? I have a few questions that may help – think of them through a career lens:

  • Think about what you value, what is most important to you, regardless of what others think.  How can this be your guide?
  • What situations help you see the divine in the every day?
  • When have you felt most proud, where has your effort has felt worthwhile?
  • Where might you be most able to express your egalitarian ideas?
  • What helps you get perspective?

Sending good thoughts your way as you navigate this crossroads!  You may want to pick up Jan Spiller’s Astrology for the Soul for more information on the Nodes and Jupiter Signs by Madalyn Aslan for ideas on working with Jupiter in Aquarius.  If you would like, Tom or I would also be more than happy to talk more in depth about your chart with you.

Second Act Careers

Question: I am recently retired.  I would like to start a new career and would love some direction.

Answer: Hi Angela.  Congratulations on your retirement.  The first step is to be very clear about your vision for yourself in retirement.  What does thFootsteps_morgueis look like?  How has it changed from your previous career?  What type of work – life balance are you seeking?  What are your professional, personal and monetary goals?  Many retirees are looking for a scaled back version to allow more leisure time.

Once your vision is clear, you may begin to explore various careers that fit the bill, keeping in mind of course there are certain roles that will resonate while others do not.  There are several key stand outs in your chart that may help with your search.   Uranus is powerfully placed on your Ascendant, suggesting you approach life in a very unique way.  This is such an important planet for you that I want to focus on it a minute.  It suggests the tendency towards a progressive, all inclusive approach to life.  Variety is very important to you as well. Anything that becomes routine has long outlived its purpose as far as you’re concerned.  You value growth and mental stimulation which are two critical ingredients to anything you do.  Uranus also rules the metaphysical including astrology so connecting with that energy would more than likely resonate very well with you.

Another key point to mention is your Leo stellium.  A stellium is three or more planets falling in the same sign, in your case Leo.  This shows a highly creative energy which I would imagine is one of your core values.  In fact you have such a powerful inner creative drive that others could be healed or transformed in some way by your creative expression.

The ability to heal also shows up with Chiron on your 7th house cusp.  You could teach as long as it somehow improved the wellbeing of others.  However, there’s a responsibility to others and tapping into the healing side of Chiron feels very right to me.  The shape of your chart is known as a bundle bucket.  Chiron is the handle of your bucket which means there’s a tremendous amount of energy radiating from the rest of your chart and being funneled through Chiron.  That’s a significant indicator for healing others!

One last item to mention is your Saturn – Neptune conjunction.   Like any conjunction, the planets are looking for a comfortable way to join forces.  This conjunction shows you have the ability to make the imaginary real and turn dreams into something tangible.  You could also look at this as applying spirituality in very real, meaningful ways to everyday life, perhaps showing or teaching others what you already know to be true.

Okay Angela. Hope you are loving your retirement so far. Thanks very much for visiting Your Cosmic Career Coach.

Tom

Change ahead?

changeQuestion: Will I stay on my path of 30 years or will it change dramatically?  – Jules

Answer: Hi Jules –

Looking at your chart, I see a few things that are important that your work life integrate and respect:

  • Personal freedom & independence
  • Ethics
  • Honest communication
  • Ongoing learning
  • Exploration of multiple options

I imagine that if these things were missing or compromised on your current path, it could be a deal breaker and instigate a change in your work life. Partnership plays a significant role in your life, so changes there might also affect changes in your work. You have high standards for yourself and do not hesitate to put in hard work, so I’m guessing that won’t change, whatever route you take.  🙂

Inquiries:

  • What goals do you have for your career over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • Are there contributions you would like to make and have not yet?
  • With whom could you share your wisdom?

Whatever direction you take, you are sure contribute wise perspective and a harmonizing influence.

Life Purpose, Career Purpose

weathervaneQuestion: How do I know my life purpose and how it interacts with my career? – Den

Answer: Great question Den! Thank you for asking it. Our life purpose is actually a huge mystery to so many of us. It’s a constant pull that guides us forward as we wander on and off our path. When you’re not aligned with your path, you know it. You’ll be stressed, frustrated and unhappy with whatever the situation is. More than likely you’ll adopt a victim mentality. When you’re living your life purpose, your work resonates with you at an internal, soul level. You feel alive and passionate about what you do. The benefit is more fulfillment and greater feelings of satisfaction. Many people will tell you their life purpose is so rewarding that it doesn’t even feel like work.

Life purpose of course does not need to be limited to only one focus. The life purpose is an energy or calling that can be expressed multiple ways. Many people choose to express it one way their entire lives. Others have multiple careers and occupations that all reflect who they are. A few things that stand out in your chart are compassion for others (we’ll come back to this), playfulness and strong communication. People more than likely see you as someone who is spontaneous, energetic and ready for action. You can thank your Aries Ascendant for the latter traits.

Your Moon is in Capricorn in the 10th house shows a highly responsible nature that leads to professional success. You become an authority in your field! You can write, teach, lead or train. Much of your path is about learning from your own experience and constructing your own philosophies, beliefs and approaches that can be shared with others.

Now back to compassion! Cancer is on your 5th house cusp which is compassion for children. In whatever way you can work with kids, you’ll be expressing your energy. Your own childhood wound is healed and transformed when you direct your compassion out into the world. Your compassion may be directed towards those who feel different or somehow excluded. They feel drawn to you because of your ability to empathize. I say this because Chiron is in Aquarius in the 11th.   Aquarius is the sign of inclusion and Chiron shows the wound around this as well as the healing takes place.

Everything so far has led up to this: If you have been wondering whether or not you’re on your path, there’s a very strong indicator in your chart that says you are a great teacher and leader of humanity. You can actually lift others up through your compassion and inspiration. If this does not resonate with you, you may feel as though you’re trapped by the day to day, routine responsibilities and tasks of your job. If that’s the case, you can make a choice at any time to align fully with your path. It’s all up to you.

Good luck! I hope this answers your question.
