Rethinking Career Path

tanner-larson-298283-unsplashQuestion:  Hello, Cosmic Career Coach! I’m wondering if you can see in my birth chart anything regarding my current career path. I’m a holistic health coach (formerly massage therapist then a teacher). After I had my son in 2010, I was working from home as a holistic coach but feel that path is limited and perhaps coming to a close (or just a re-vamping in how I present it?). I feel passionate about healing and am particularly intuitive/sensitive/psychic to the collective consciousness and have a deep connection with nature. I’ve been working with shamanism for several decades.

In any case, thanks so much for considering my question!
Sincerely,
Jen

Answer: Hi Jen, thanks so much for reaching out. This is a fantastic year astrologically to be considering these questions.

Your chart shows strong signatures for your intuitive and psychic gifts, as well as your penchant for healing and nature.  Yours is also the chart of someone to whom it is important to share these gifts out in the world in a transformational way.

From now until the end of the year, the astrological energies asking you to vision, refine and expand your contribution.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • What foundations or structures do you need in place to support your work?
  • Are there challenges calling your name?
  • To what kind of depths do you want to go with people?
  • What’s your ideal use of your intuitive talents?
  • Are you getting signs about direction?
  • What are you really committed to in your work life?
  • What was happening in the Fall of 2006? (there could be good information to apply to your situation now)

Overall, this can be a time of slow movement, with the path ahead being a little unclear.  Things will get clearer with time, effort and reflection.

Sending good thoughts your way as you discover what is next!

If we can be of any additional help, feel free to reach out to me or Tom.

Torn Between Work and Family

yeshi-kangrang-325341Dear Cosmic Career Coaches:

I am currently pretty confused about what direction my career should take?
I was working right out of graduation in a government job which I quit after having babies as I did not enjoy the job being too administrative. I imagine that I would enjoy a more dynamic job that allows me to travel abroad , however with young children now, my options are limited.

In order to have a career and yet have time for my kids , I’m wondering if I should consider a job in real estate sales that offers flexible schedule? However I’m not sure if I can make it in sales? and I’m more drawn towards the arts and a career that has more meaning. I am also interested in astrology and counseling but that requires me to further study for the relevant knowledge and skill set as right now I only have a generic business degree.

Another sensible option would be a shift job as a childhood teacher, that would match well with my current stage in life, however I have a feeling that I won’t have enough patience for young children (also the reason why I decide that I can’t be a full-time housewife looking after my kids ).

Marriage and family is very important to me so I feel torn between work and family. I am not certain of what talents or skills I can value add to a workplace, but I just know that I need an identity outside of marriage for me to stay sane. Really appreciate any advice or insights you can offer me from looking at my chart.

Thanks, Confused

Hi Confused, many thanks for reaching out.  I can sense the tension that’s happening for you!  It is clear that you need work outside the the house that challenges your mind, supports your understanding of yourself as an independent person and feels meaningful.  It is also clear you have family commitments that require this chapter of your work life be flexible and doesn’t necessarily require further education.

From your chart and from your note, I gather that choosing work solely for the schedule will not suffice and that as innately good at being a mom that you are, there’s a strong drive in you to contribute in additional ways.  In situations like these, I think you are on a helpful track to think about what talents and needs you have.  Here are a few I notice in your chart:

Contributions

  • Seeing the big picture
  • Giving of yourself generously
  • Investigating, research – finding what is really going on
  • Taking on challenges, leadership
  • Coming up with new ways of approaching things
  • Focus on things that feel deeply important

Logistical Needs

  • Autonomy, independence and freedom to set your own agenda and act on it
  • Variety of input and information
  • Mental stimulation
  • Expansive, broadening your experience of the world
  • Environment of trust

yuxiang-zhang-437423Could you be a great counselor (astrology or otherwise)?  Absolutely!  Could you also excel in real estate and other relationship based sales careers?  Totally!   Often when there seems like many options for what roles/titles you could do and it is confusing which one would be the best fit (for now and the future), I suggest looking through a different lens to alleviate some of the stuckness.

One such lens is looking at your search first through the eyes of sector.  While travel is difficult at this stage, perhaps focus on work that will bring an expansiveness to your mind.  Consider working at a local educational institution where you can be close to learning, take advantage of free lectures.

Another lens is to think about culture and mission.  What organizations are doing really innovative work that is helping people?  Are there places where you can really get behind their mission?

Looking at your chart, this upcoming year is a great time to look at these kinds of questions – how does you work life need to change?  When you get right down to it, what is at the core of what you want and need?

Sending good thoughts your way as you uncover what’s next!

If we can be of any additional help, feel free to reach out to me or Tom!

Chiron Return and Next Steps

sports-768430_1920Dear Cosmic Career Coach:  Thank you so much for the episode on Redesigning your Career in your 50’s. I held on to every word. I’ve always been an optimistic person, but this Chiron Return has turned my world upside down. In addition, transiting Saturn is conjunct my midheaven. One month ago, I was unexpectedly laid off from my job. Admittedly, it was unfulfilling work, but it paid the bills and gave me–a single person with no other income–stability. I feel this layoff and Chiron Rx time is a “call to authenticity”, yet I’m terrified I’m going to end up as a bag lady. My secret dream is to be a full time astrologer and tarot reading, and perhaps working in hospice or with the dying on the side (in a creative endeavor). But I’m stuck… a lot of this has to do with trying to keep tranquil while wondering how I’m going to pay the bills. And another part feels like this is the perfect kick in the pants to GET REAL. Can you help?  — J.B.

Hi JB,

Thanks very much for your question and our apologies for the delay in responding. We just finished presenting our webinar about how to include coaching in your astrological practice. If anyone is interested, recordings are available at http://www.astrocollege.com.
Yes, transiting Chiron is right on your natal Chiron so you’re in the midst of your return. That’s such an important phase in life that shows your values are shifting. Many people begin a search for more meaning in their careers.
Transiting Jupiter just entered Scorpio today after 13 months in Libra. It’s transiting your natal Mars. This is an excellent time for you to put energy into getting clear about what’s important to you, i.e., your values, talents, likes, dislikes. If you decide you want to get a job to keep money coming in until you get things figured out, now is a great time.
You obviously have a number of professions that appeal to you which is a great place to be. It sounds like your main challenge is whether or not to make the commitment to move forward doing what you want. Your fears are common so it’s important to ask yourself how real are they? Are they just fears or is there something else that needs to be considered?
What is it about astrology or tarot that appeals to you? How do you want to be of service to others and how does being an astrologer fit in with that? What are the similarities between astrology, tarot and hospice that you like? Find the common thread and it will help you move forward. There must be a number of very important core values that could be honored in those professions. Ideally you want to bring your own unique talents into whatever you decide to do in order to feel the most fulfilled.
Okay that brings us to your chart which is quite interesting with your Pisces stellium opposing PL cnj UR. Your chart not only shows a grand water trine but a kite pattern which is not all that common. A kite is called a kite because that’s exactly what it looks like. It occurs when a grand trine has a 4th planet that opposes 1 of the planets in the grand trine. The opposition gives the grand trine some energy and brings it to life. Grand water trines alone are generally quiet, receptive, intuitive, sensitive and indicate a tremendous amount of talent. The beauty of having a kite pattern is that the opposition causes friction which can feel like a tug of war sometimes. The opposing forces challenge you to show your talents to the world. Many times people with grand trines don’t capitalize on their talents because there’s not enough energy to force it. But the kite activates opportunities for creative expression in the world.
Many of your natal planets are pulled into this kite pattern. There are many ways you can express this energy. It’s visionary, intuitive and imaginative. It’s also healing, nurturing and compassionate.
Your natal Chiron is part of this pattern so with transiting Chiron returning to its natal position, it’s no wonder you’re searching for more meaning. Many of the qualities that are resident in this pattern are being triggered by transiting Chiron. Here are a few questions to consider:

• What are your natural talents?
• What is holding you back from showing them to the world?
• How do you want to show them to the world?
• What is the connection to astrology, tarot and hospice?
• If you had everything you needed, what would you do professionally? How can you do it anyway?

I hope this helps you with your decision making about next steps for your career.

Your Cosmic Career Coach,

Tom Chaplin
